How to dress up a jean skirt

Jean skirts are kind of funny.

I bought this skirt last week on Amazon and showed it in my haul - I immediately got comments like, "That's super 90s!" and "What a throwback!" Jean skirts can definitely can lean that way, and sometimes it's even fun to lean into the 90s aesthetic, but I took those comments as a challenge. How could I take a knee-length, faded jean skirt and yank it into 2019?

I went to my closet to explore my options, and a button-down blouse seemed like a good place to start. Already, the outfit was starting to look more modern. Then I went to my accessories drawer and pulled out a long necklace that I'd bought at Francesca's awhile back. I wrapped it around twice, layered it, and tucked it underneath my collar. Throwing on some gold and purple earrings and a Kate Spade watch, I needed one last touch to complete the look.

I grabbed my spring/summer heels (they're super comfortable and a great way to welcome the new season) and slid them on my feet. Tah-dah! And here's the finished look.

I always think it's fun to play against stereotypes when it comes to certain pieces connoting a certain era. If you're going to wear a pair of bell-bottoms, for example, rather than leaning into the 70s look, wear a blazer and a springy, chiffon blouse. If you're going to wear a 20s-style flapper dress, throw a leather jacket on top. Doing this can keep you from looking like you're wearing a costume and show people that you really know how to style your clothing.

What did you think of this look? Are you convinced? Would you wear a jean skirt? Let me know in the comments!

Amazon haul: Skirts under $30

3/22/2019

Spring is officially here, and that means it's time to freshen up your closet and get some new skirts!

Wearing skirts in the winter can be a real pain. Even when you wear tights it's too cold. And then you have to find a sweater that isn't too bulky if you're planning on tucking it in. It's a whole to-do.

But skirts in the spring? They may not be groundbreaking, as Miranda Priestly would say, but they're the absolute best. So I hopped onto Amazon and did a haul of five skirts under $30 to see if I could find something of good quality that could actually fit in my closet. I tried on all of the skirts with the same top and heels just to keep the focus on the skirts. Here are the results.

Skirt #1: Tantalizing Tweed

Size: M
Do I recommend? Yes.
Pros: Fabric, length, overall design
Cons: Lining, elasticized waist in the back

The first thing I noticed about this skirt was the weight of the fabric. It was heavy and felt like good quality. It's also a really pretty print with a hint of blue laced throughout the tweed. I liked the length as well, which hit at a flattering point on the calf (if you're wearing heels - a heavy midi skirt like this never looks good with flats, in my opinion). The attached lining feels like polyester and only comes about 2/3's of the way down the length of the skirt, but that didn't really bother me. My only issue was the waistband/size. Many of the reviews online warned that this skirt ran small, and because the back of the skirt is elasticized, I sized up. Unfortunately, that meant the skirt was too big in the waist for me. But overall, I thought this skirt was great quality, especially for the price. I plan on exchanging it for the small, and I look forward to wearing it!

Skirt #2: Embroidered Emerald

Size: M, 4-6
Do I recommend? Yes.
Pros: Fabric, embroidery, total look
Cons: No hook at the top of the zipper, no stretch

This skirt was a bit out of my comfort zone. It's a little more bohemian than I usually go, but the color of the corduroy was too pretty to pass up! The embroidery on this skirt is lovely, and the fabric feels expensive in your hands - the lack of a closure at the top of the zipper, though, was a reminder that this skirt was under $30. The size I purchased was a little small for me as the skirt has no stretch, but I'm planning to exchange it for one size up. I think that this skirt would look really cute dressed up or down, and it's a good statement piece that you can style in multiple ways.

Skirt #3: Pleated Pink

Size: S
Do I recommend? No.
Pros: Color, fabric, length
Cons: Fit, stray threads, elastic waistband

This is a skirt that's made to be photographed in motion. It's got all that swooshy-ness that looks great when you're spinning but doesn't look so great when you're just standing still. On a positive note, the color of this skirt is vibrant in person, and the fabric doesn't feel cheap. But I personally don't like when skirts have an elastic waist that isn't at least covered in the same fabric as the rest of the skirt. Also, there were a lot of stray threads at the seam between the elastic and the skirt itself, which made it feel inexpensive. The length doesn't work on this skirt like it does on the tweed, because the fabric on this is lighter and it makes the skirt feel heavy when it shouldn't.

Skirt #4: Daring Denim

Size: 4
Do I recommend? Yes.
Pros: Fit, Stretch, Fabric
Cons: None that I've noticed!

I got some real '90s vibes from this skirt - I just had to buy it. And I'm so glad I did! This skirt is really stretchy, which makes it super comfortable. I think I probably could even have sized down if I had wanted, just because there's so much stretch. But I'll be honest with you: I bought this skirt for Passover when I'll be playing with my nieces and nephews, and I wanted to be able to bend over and sit on the floor comfortably! This skirt comes in a ton of different colors, and I think it would look more classic in a dark wash and more summery in a white. I'm considering whether I'll exchange this skirt for a different color, or keep it and order another one in a size down for when I won't be playing with the kiddies!

Skirt #5: Adorable A-Line

Size: S
Do I recommend? Yes.
Pros: Print, sizing, length
Cons: Fabric is thin, no lining

This skirt is so cute! I love the print - as someone who adores Broadway, this skirt makes me do a little happy dance. And it comes in so many different and unique prints, you can definitely find something that fits your personality! The cotton is a little thin, but I think for the spring and summer that's a good thing. The only small problem is that there's no lining, so depending on the color that you get, you may need to wear a slip. But the fit on this was great, and I think it's a really adorable addition to any closet.

Which of these skirts was your favorite? Have you ordered and worn any of them yourself? Let me know in the comments!

Instant winter beach vacation style

It's my husband's spring break, and we were lucky enough to go to a beach town for a week. A beach town on the east coast. In winter.

We've gone to the beach - in winter coats. We've gotten in the hot tub - as it was 35 degrees around us. We've indulged in alcohol - usually poured into cups of tea or hot chocolate.

Now, don't get me wrong. All of this has been absolutely lovely, and I'm so happy that we can spend time together in such a beautiful area. But as a girl who was born in Los Angeles and didn't know the meaning of weather until about four years ago, going to the beach in a winter jacket was an altogether new experience!

When packing for this trip, I knew that I wanted to retain the feeling of beachy-ness while also keeping warm as we explored the area. Of course this meant that we were right back to my old standbys - navy and white! Nautical colors are my jam, and wearing them felt like a nod to the area that we're staying in without committing fully to a tank top and shorts in freezing temperatures.

I started with a striped high/low blouse (similar here)  that's really flowy and comfortable, but also has enough shape that it looks like I put some effort in. Underneath, I wore an undershirt so that I wouldn't have to worry if the wind picked up and my collar shifted around! I finished off the outfit with my favorite new pair of jeans, the Levi's Wedgie Skinny Ankle Jeans. Oh my gosh, get a pair of these as fast as you can! They are comfortable and they make your body look and feel great. I love the cut of them and right now, it's hard to convince me to wear any other pair of jeans that I own. The frayed cuffs on the bottom add the littlest bit of sass without drawing attention. I'm telling you - I'm a believer.

The red nail polish was a fun splash of color. I only get gel manicures for the time being because I hate getting my nails done and then immediately ruining them by doing something clumsy. Does that happen to anyone else? It drives me crazy! Instead, I get a gel manicure once every three weeks and then I simply don't have to worry about it.

I finished off with my trusty navy booties and a few standard accessories that I don't generally take off. I didn't want to bring a whole host of accessories on our vacation and worry about forgetting or losing something, so I just wore a few things that I could leave on with every outfit. My earrings are a pair that I've been loving since I purchased them - I can wear them to sleep, they're so comfortable! They are fancy enough for an evening out but subtle enough to wear during the day. My necklace (similar here) fits into the same category - it's very versatile.

What do you pack for a winter vacation? Have you taken a vacation to a beach in the winter? What did you do while you were there? Let me know in the comments!

My winter fashion secret weapon

Do you have a fall coat that you wish you could wear during the coldest days of the year? I know that I do.

I hate putting on puffer jackets for the same reason that I love it: they're warm, cozy, and make me feel like a marshmallow. I used to wonder how all of these starlets and models could walk around New York on a freezing day in a coat that wasn't entirely insulated.

And then I figured it out.

I found my winter secret weapon, and it's the most amazing jacket ever. You would never even know it's there - it provides you warmth without any of the bulk and layers perfectly with your favorite fall coats! Here's the crazy story: I purchased the UNIQLO Women's Ultra Light Down Puffer Jacket in an airport. I was waiting for a flight and I read on my phone that the weather was going to be colder than expected. Looking around me, I saw one of those UNIQLO vending machines and made a spur of the moment decision: buy the jacket and risk it.

Oh my gosh, was it worth it! On a spring night it keeps me warm; in the winter it hides underneath my fall coats and no one is any the wiser. It's also extremely packable because it rolls up into a little ball that fits wherever you want to put it. Now, I don't have to wear a big puffer jacket on a freezing day!

Unless I want to look like a marshmallow.
