Full disclosure: I took these pictures in 90 degree heat.
And I didn't even care. These jeans are so cute, and this top is so bright, it didn't even matter that I was sweating and begging for ice water. I LOVE this outfit. As I mentioned in my last post, I've been using Rent the Runway Unlimited, and I've been loving it. I would highly recommend checking it out. If you're someone who likes to change up your wardrobe quite often but also doesn't want your closet to keep growing, this is a really fun and exciting solution. After going through their site, I saw these Jason Wu jeans and thought they were simply too cute to pass up. Wearing a pair of seamed jeans is cool because it adds flair to your outfit but still acts as a neutral. The seaming on this pair was really interesting, and finding a nice pair of long-lasting, well-fitting jeans generally equals a higher price tag. These jeans are no exception, but A) they live up to the hype, and B) renting them is a much more affordable option. Jacob even mentioned that he liked these jeans - if your husband comments on your denim, you know you're doing something right. I decided to pair these high-waisted jeans with a top that nipped in at the waist, was a bright color, and was made of an interesting, spring-appropriate fabric. This J. Crew top was a perfect match. The other nice thing about pairing these two pieces together is the mixture of hard and soft - the masculinity of the seaming on the jeans is softened by the eyelet and draping of the top. I paired my outfit with a pair of my own shoes which I bought last summer and am still wearing! The embroidery on the back of these shoes is so unique and makes these heels appropriate for daytime and evening. As well, the flowers subtly tie into the orange of the top. Last but not least, I wore this GORGEOUS new necklace my husband bought me for our anniversary. We recently celebrated our first anniversary (hooray!) and my husband purchased this necklace for me from a jewelry designer named Keith Jack. It's double-sided, and I'm wearing the day side. The weaving of the necklace mimics the eyelet pattern of the top, and to be fair, this necklace matches pretty much anything. Do you own a pair of seamed jeans? Would you try some? Graduation season is upon us!
I, for one, am really excited to celebrate my husband's graduation from law school - it's a huge accomplishment and I couldn't be more proud of him. This weekend will be chock-full of celebratory events, from graduation parties to cocktail hours to the graduation itself! When you're choosing a dress for your own graduation or for a loved one's, you have to keep a few things in mind: what the weather will be like, how fancy the after-parties will be, and what vibe you want to go for. When I graduated, I wore a little pink dress with some killer heels (since those were all that would show under my graduation gown), but I had friends who were much more casual than I was (for example, one chose to wear a jumpsuit). Be true to your style and have fun with your look! I decided that for my husband's graduation, I wanted to wear a dress that would be light enough for a hot day but that still had sleeves since my arms tend to get cold no matter what the season. I recently signed up for Rent the Runway Unlimited because I wanted to try more clothes that were currently available so that my subscribers could actually purchase what I show in my blog posts, and I'm loving it! Because I don't want to fill my closet with clothing that I might only wear a couple of times, I thought that renting my clothes would be a more sustainable option. The clothing they have on their website is truly beautiful, and if you're the kind of person who likes to try new outfits every month, this might be a really good fit for you. If you're interested in trying their program, click this link to get $30 off your first order! I scrolled through the Rent the Runway website and came across this Tanya Taylor dress. It is so beautiful and well-made, and the ruching on the bodice makes it really flattering. I also loved the color scheme - this dress can easily transition from day to night, and it really is springy (rather than summery) because of the depth of the colors. This dress also plays with one of my number one fashion rules: how to strategically show skin in a tasteful way. By pairing a shorter skirt with an entirely covered top, you look really tasteful! I did find that this dress runs slightly big - so if you're unsure what size to go with, I would recommend sizing down. To make sure that my look was daytime appropriate, I decided to rent this purse - it's by Kate Spade, and I thought it was simply too cute to pass up! The navy leather detailing ties it to the color of the dress, but the wicker makes it feel light and perfect for spring weather. The shoes are a favorite of mine that I've been loving from DSW for months now, and they were the perfect addition to this look. They are flattering and would look great with a graduation gown, and they're comfortable to walk in as well. That's an important rule: if you're walking for graduation, choose a pair of shoes that you can walk comfortably in! Last but not least, I paired a silver cuff, a pair of blue geometric earrings, and a gold initial necklace with this look. I thought this dress was such a showstopper that I only wanted to enhance it, not distract from it. But wearing a bold bracelet with a graduation gown is always a good idea since that might be the one accessory that will show beneath your graduation gown! And that's the finished look! I can't wait to wear it to my husband's graduation. What are you planning on wearing to any graduations that you may be attending this season? What's your favorite part of this look? Finding the perfect pair of shorts can be tricky.
A lot of shorts are too short, in my opinion, to be worn without being self-conscious. I mean, I like a good pair of shorts as much as the next person, but they should be tasteful. As someone who makes the argument that wearing leggings is immodest, I would be a hypocrite if I were to recommend shorts that showed everything but the kitchen sink. So how do you find the perfect pair of warm-weather shorts? I always keep four things in mind when I'm shopping. Here's what I keep an eye out for: 1. Length - The first thing I always check is the length. When I bend over, I don't want to be worried about showing off all my assets, if you get my drift. I look for a pair of shorts that hits about three inches below the widest part of my hips. Thumb-length is usually a good starting point, but it depends on how long your arms are. I find that the shorter a pair of shorts are, the more uncomfortable they get. And I'll be honest with you - short-shorts are generally unflattering. Why? Two reasons. The first is that if you wear a pair of short-shorts, they will probably cut your legs off at their widest point. From far away, that's where the eye is drawn and it makes you look wider than you really are. The second is when you sit down, your legs generally spread a bit (unless you're so toned that your muscles hold their shape, in which case, more power to you). If your shorts are really short, they'll squeeze your leg as you sit down in a less-than flattering way. So I'm a proponent of wearing shorts that hit a bit further down the leg - and are more comfortable to boot. 2. Waistline - I love myself a good pair of high-waisted shorts, but choose the waistline that is most comfortable and flattering for your body shape. I tend to recommend high-waisted shorts because you have the option of tucking in a shirt for a cute outfit or leaving your shirt untucked for a less polished look. But whatever waistline you generally wear, keep it in mind and choose something that you'll actually enjoy wearing, not throw in a drawer and forget about. The shorts I'm wearing above are one of my favorites because of the little buckles on the side that look adorable when I tuck in a button-down white blouse. 3. Fit - I highly recommend choosing a pair of shorts with a more relaxed fit around the leg. I like the pair above because they flair out at the hip, which is really flattering, but a straight-cut will also give you ease-of-movement and not squeeze your leg in an unflattering way. I don't think that shorts need to be tight to be flattering, especially since you're already showing your legs. So choose a pair that fits you just right. 4. Style - This is where it gets fun! As you probably know by know, I am obsessed with nautical clothing. So when I saw these shorts, I couldn't resist. Another pair of shorts that I own has little blue flowers all over a red background - and they're adorable. Choose a style of shorts that you'll love wearing. They can be flowered, striped, lacy, or denim - just choose a pair that you love and you're excited to wear. I've linked a few alternatives to my shorts below. What do you look for in the perfect pair of shorts?
